If you claimed eight or more exemptions on your taxes than you are now required to submit additional documentation in order to receive a tax refund.

It is the first time in its history that the North Carolina Department of Revenue is delaying state income-tax refunds based on the number of dependents claimed by the filer.

Large families across the state are outraged by the new policy. Parents are being asked to provide birth certificates and Social Security cards of children. Other documents are requested as well. If the families do not comply with the new policy their refund will be forfeited. The notice warned: “Your refund will not be processed unless proper documentation is provided.” Many families believe the new policy is a ploy by the state to enrich the state’s treasury.

North Carolina has 86,421 family households with six or more persons according to the Census Bureau 2005-2007 report.
